After its initiation in 2001, Softcom – an excellent effort by the students of GIK Institute – has constantly been receiving great appreciation from all vistas of information technology and software industry. Strong acknowledgement of its achievements has suggested the organizers with every reason to hold it for another time and improve upon any perceived short comings. The GIK Institute has taken a leading role in setting up this tradition in the country and now it’s firmly set and glowing. The IT industry is the fastest growing global industry and software engineers are some of the most sought after professionals in the world today. There is wide spread agreement that the single most important input to the software production process is skilled labor, but the relative lack of such skilled labor is the most serious constraint to software industry development. A huge expansion in Pakistani software market is envisaged and, therefore, this initiative can only be supported by a commensurate in Pakistan’s output of software engineers the key requirement of which is: volume and quality. The undergraduate program here at GIK Institute combines the strength of computer science and engineering curricula. The courses develop a professional approach to design a computer bases system looking, at both widely applicable principles of software engineering and at specific practices and techniques used in computer based information system. The graduate of this faculty will be able to lead the highest standards of training for leadership in diverse areas of computer science and computer engineering profession including research, teaching and high technology industry and R&D organization.
Today’s era can without a doubt be called the era of automation, computation and machinery, in short everything that ACM stands for. We at GIK Institute not only are aware of the importance of IT but we also realize that keeping in touch with the latest technological advancements, the most outstanding problems and their most creative solution is the key to making a mark in this field. Keeping this in view, we are organizing the 14th All-Pakistan Softcom to interact with students of different educational institutes, professionals from the industry and pioneers in this field. We have continuously shown mastery in organizing such a large-scale event and have been graced with prestigious guests like the Governor K.P.K, Chief Minister K.P.K, The Minister of Information Technology and The Country Manager of Motorola as Chief Guests. Furthermore, Softcom is also given extensive media coverage in newspapers and on various television channels. The total number of participants easily exceeds two hundred every year and numerous professionals of reputed companies throughout the industry attend the event. This year we are expecting an increased participation from both the Institutes and the industry.
